Chapter Seventy-Nine
I closed up the envelope, stood, and turned to look behind me. Candy had put everything on the line for me. But what still made little sense was how Frank got his hands on the documents that should have been kept sealed.
I said to Candy, âCâmon. Letâs go.â
She looked up at me and blinked her brown eyes from behind a curtain of thick eyelashes. âDoes that mean we have a deal?â
I didnât know what to do about Candy, but I couldnât leave her here.
Worried this might be part of Frankâs offensive strategy, I thought through every angle, trying to find a conclusion to how this could come back to bite me in the ass. In the end, I came up with nothing. The way those innocent doll eyes were looking at me, I believed Candyâs motivation today was honest as a nun. But I needed her to prove she was willing to take it the whole nine yards.
I said, âItâs not for me to decide.â
âThen where are you taking me?â
âYouâre going to tell the same story you just told me to the assistant district attorney.â
Candyâs face flushed and she looked scared.
âThe sheriffâs office can protect you, but only if you come with me now.â
Candy wrung her hands and shook her head. Then she said, âI gave you what you needed, and you can do what you want with it, but I canât come with you. Ray will be looking for me.â
âIf you want to avoid second degree murder charges, you donât have a choice but to come with me.â
Finally, she stood and nodded her head. I asked where she was parked, and we decided it best to leave her car here. âNo sense in showing it off at the station.â
Candy called her lawyer on our way to Central Command and, after a quick discussion, she told him to meet us there.
Twenty minutes later, I walked her through the front doors and led her down the hallway, through a couple corridors, and into an empty interrogation room where I told her to wait. I closed the door on my way out and stared through the one-way glass, asking again if she could be trusted. I never expected Candy to break so easily, but her vulnerability was my only way out from the mess Iâd found myself in.
I went to look for Sergeant Hart and ended up speaking with Deputy Chief David instead. He wasnât my first choice but, as soon as he saw me, I knew he would ask to be briefed.
âWhere have you been, Jackson? You apprehended a suspect then disappeared.â
âTying up loose ends,â I said, handing him the files Candy had given me.
âWhatâs this?â he asked when looking at the nondescript white envelope.
I briefed him on what was inside, then added, âTheyâre exactly the same as the documents given to Cruz.â
David lifted his gaze and looked me in the eye. âThe papers you still have?â
I confirmed with a single nod of my head.
David sat down and leafed through the stack.
